Jill Hobson

Jill is a full-time New Zealand-Canadian artist who paints to discover and share meaning. Her formal art training was in New Zealand, and she now paints for exhibitions and commissions. She has enjoyed diverse teaching roles and residencies in New Zealand and Canada. Jill has paintings in international private, corporate, and public collections, including those of hospitals, care facilities, and community spaces.

Jill's paintings explore human relationships in search of what holds us together. She likes to think of people as vessels of connection. She shares experienced moments and sensations where connections range from hopeful and inclusive to fractured or completely missed. Abstracted figures become a metaphor for the broader human condition. Breaking down boundaries allows permeable figures to merge with each other and their environment. Experimental and intuitive, she paints in layers of mixed water media and oil, using processes like sweep, share and equalize. Jill employs imagination, colour relationships and symbolic elements as a means to transcend time and space and connect with her roots, her here-and-now experiences and, most importantly, the viewer.
